The Legend for the Name Nandhipura Vinnagaram

Pushkarini is Nandhi Theertham.. This place was once with full of the flower called Shenbagam. Hence Thayar here is being worshipped as Shenbagavalli Thayar. The place is being called as Nadhipuram as this village and the temple were built by one of the Vishnu Devotee King Nandhi Varman. Another interesting legend is also there for the Name of this place. Once Nandhi ( Vahanam of Lord Shiva ) wanted to have darshan of Lord Maha Vishnu and proceeded to Vaikundam. While entering, he was stopped by Dwarapalakas ( The Centries of the Almighty ). Angered Nandhi tried to force his way in and because of that he was cursed by Dwarapalakas. Frightened Nandhi surrendered to Lord Shiva and asked for the remedy. As advised by Lord Shiva, Nandhi came down to Shenbagaranyam near Kumbakonam and underwent a penance towards Sreeman Narayanan and got absolved of his sins. Since then this place and the temple is being called as Nandhipura Vinnagaram. Devotees can see a niche of Nandhi on the outer wall here, which is very unusual in Sree vaishnava Temples.

Jaganatha Perumal turned from East to West

The Legend says that intially the Almighty here was facing East and later He was turned around facing West because of Emperor Sibi Chakravarthi, a Righteous Emperor well known for his Truthful and Honesty. Once Dharma Rajan decided to test the Emperor. One day a Pigeon was being chased by an Eagle came to Sibi Chakravarthy seeking for asylum. Sibi promised to save the Pigeon. Annoyed Eagle was asking the emperor for the pigeon. King faced a dilemma as he wanted to protect the Pigeon and at the same time he could not deny the eagle’s rights of having the pigeon as the food. At last the emperor offered the Eagle his own flesh an equal weight of the pigeon. The eagle agreed. Sibi Chakravarthy finally was ready to offer his flesh. Dharma Rajan who was in the form of Eagle and Indhiran who was in the form of Pigeon were pleased with the King’s commitment to protect the weak. Almighty here wanted to witness this incident and turned from East to West. There is an another legend why the Almighty here in Nathankoil is facing West.
